Rhinoplasty – In the Know about Nose Jobs

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a 'nose job', has deep historic roots.

When you think of a rhinoplasty, or nose job, you think of countless Hollywood stars, singers and celebrities. But rhinoplasty didn't originate in LA or the pages of glossy magazines, in fact it's thought to originate in India circa 500 BC. The word 'rhinoplasty' comes from the Greek, 'rhino' meaning 'nose' and 'plassein' translating as 'to shape'.

Rhinoplasty: For Trauma, Defects and Aesthetics

Reconstructive surgery or cosmetic surgery to re-shape the nose is done for two reasons – one is purely aesthetic, where a rhinoplasty is to reshape a nose a person believes is ugly or ill-proportioned. The other reason for a rhinoplasty is because of a breathing problem, birth defect or to correct another kind of trauma as a result of an accident.

Rhinoplasty: An Ancient History

Historians believe the origins of the rhinoplasty lie with a physician called Sushruta in 500BC, who has been dubbed the 'father of plastic surgery'. It's thought the first rhinoplasty procedures were developed to reconstruct the noses of criminals – noses were sometimes amputated as punishment for a crime. As well as in India, there is evidence to suggest that the ancient Egyptians also practiced facial reconstruction surgery to help repair injuries.

Facial Reconstruction and the Great War

In the West, John Orlando Roe is said to have performed the first intranasal rhinoplasty in 1887, and although plastic surgery used for cosmetic reasons is perceived as a very modern phenomena, in 1898 Jacques Joseph has been credited with performing the first rhinoplasty on patients who felt their nose caused them embarrassment. Facial plastic surgery really progressed in the mid 1800s as technology progressed. World War One was also a trigger for medical advancement. In response to the injuries and deformities suffered on such a large scale, medical professions reacted by advancing reconstrucive surgeries to help rebuild the extensive facial injuries troops suffered. Alongside surgical advances, anesthesia and antiseptic practices improved. The War was a major turning point for rhinoplasty procedures. From here, plastic surgery grew and established itself firmly into the medical world.
