WHAT IS GASTRIC BANDING?
The gastric band is an adjustable device which is made from
silastic. It is placed around the upper stomach creating a small
gastric pouch.
The band has a balloon attached, which can be inflated or
deflated via a port which is placed under the skin of the lower
chest or sternum.
Above the band is the small gastric pouch which is capable of
holding only a mouthful of food. During a meal food enters the
small gastric pouch, passes through the channel guarded by the
gastric band into the main part of the stomach. The balloon is
inflated creating a narrower channel. Depending on the extent the
balloon is inflated will determine the speed the food passes
through the body.
This surgery is not suitable for everybody, which is why it is
important that you have an in depth consultation with your
specialist to discuss all aspects of the treatment.
